Midnight police swoop on Baba Ramdev, detention ends protest

New Delhi, Jun 5 (PTI) With talks breaking down, police swooped down on Baba Ramdev a little past midnight and detained him after firing tear gas shells and resorting to lathicharge on his supporters to end his day-old indefinite hunger strike on black money issue.
The dramatic police action came after government and the 46-year-old Yoga Guru had accused each other the previous night of betrayal on mutual assurances.
The drama that broke the midnight calm in the Ramlila Maidan a little after 1 AM unfolded when a large number of police personnel descended at the protest venue where Ramdev was demanding immediate action to bring back black money stashed in foreign tax havens.
After day break, police cleared all the remnants of Baba''s support by evicting his followers from the protest site amidst stiff resistance.
Delhi Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said Baba Ramdev was detained as he was leaving the site.
Later sources said he was allowed to go out of Delhi and probably he was headed to Haridwar.
Earlier, Home Secretary G K Pillai had maintained that he was not arrested or detained, a point echoed by Delhi Police Commissioner B K Gupta, who also rushed to the spot.
Gupta said there were some security concerns and that the permission for the yoga camp has been cancelled.
He said Ramdev's supporters indulged in stone throwing. Police did not use force except to use some tear gas, he added.

First date fibs

First dates can be nerve-racking and tend to be steeped in little white lies. You’re promoting a better, glossier version of yourself. Showcasing the best bits, not the paranoid, annoying, lazy, real you. In new romcom Just Go With It, Adam Sandler stars as a plastic surgeon who tells his new girlfriend he’s married as a means of avoiding real commitment, which leads to him recruiting a fake family to prove his honesty.
This got us wondering how honest men actually are when they’re trying to impress on a first date, here are some of the most common and most ridiculous lies men have told to get the girl.
As a general rule, men will lie about how much they like a girl and play up what a good time they’ve had if they think there’s more chance of getting a result – sad but true! There is also the tendency to feign interest in the girl’s favourite types of music, films, books, political beliefs, green issues, or anything else she spends time talking about, in order to appear to have more in common than with her than is strictly true.
“I pretended to be really into the environment when I actually never recycled and drove everywhere.”
Another common lie is the one about coming out of another relationship recently – and the psychological impact it’s had – because they want the benefits without the commitment. This also works when claiming that they’re not looking for anything serious because in a few months they’re leaving the country, moving city or becoming a monk.
“I told a girl I was dating that I’d just landed a supporting role in a major blockbuster film (top secret of course), and had to move to America for filming.”
Exaggerate much?
Exaggeration is something we’re all guilty of, and that desire to be seen as a success can lead to any number of little white lies.‘Working in IT’ doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as ‘Head of the IT Department’, and then there’s the Mercedes he happened to park several streets away that looks suspiciously like his mum’s old Ford Fiesta.
Lying about salary and financial status happens all the time, describing the studio flat as a penthouse, flashing around a friend’s expired American Express Centurion card (yes, this actually happened) and generally behaving as though he always carries around lots of £20 notes and buys the most expensive wine on the list.
“When I was working as a street cleaner I used to tell girls I was a Nike representative, I don’t know why, it just seemed cool at the time!”
Playing the pity card
Then there are the pity lies. “I once told a girl I cried at Titanic so I’d seem like a sensitive guy”, “I brought up the fact I’d recently had a testicular cancer scare so she’d feel sorry for me”. And possibly the worst of all: “I knew a guy at college who used to pretend to women that he was a virgin because he was so embarrassed of his small penis, strangely this used to make them feel sorry for him – and he slept with more women than anyone else I knew!”
There are the blatant and outrageous lies: “I once told a former girlfriend I could’ve been a professional footballer but for sustaining knee ligament damage as a 16 year old, and that I went to uni instead (where we met). It was meant as a joke - just harmless fun, but she mentioned it about six months later and had been telling loads of people when telling them about me - her family and mates back home etc. Happily, none of her family ever saw me actually attempt to play football!”
And the fake brushes with fame: “I got my mate to tell a Swedish girl in a pub in Amsterdam that I was Colin Farrell’s cousin (the lie is more believable if someone tells it on your behalf with you seemingly oblivious).”
“I remember telling some girls in a club that I was Armand Van Helden’s manager and could get them back stage; I had to make myself scarce after that so they wouldn’t hold me to it.”
“I once told a girl I was a Robbie Williams impersonator, I was a big fan of his at the time but I cringe about it now!”
“I actually pretended I went on Wacaday as a child and met Timmy Mallett”, (we're not really sure how this is impressive!)
Not forgetting the lie that backfires: “A mate of mine was stopped in the street by a pretty charity collector – he got out of signing up by saying he had no money because he was a recovering drug addict, they got on so well they ended up going on a date but then she found out it was a lie and it was really awkward.”

I will certainly begin fast against corruption: Baba Ramdev

New Delhi, June 1 (IANS) Despite a round of talks with senior United Progressive Alliance ministers, yoga guru Baba Ramdev rejected pleas to call off his planned hunger strike, asserting that he will begin his agitation against corruption and black money from Saturday.
'The agitation from June 4 will spread from Delhi's Ramlila Maidan to 624 districts in the country and, on the first day itself, more than one crore people will fast and participate in the satyagraha,' Ramdev told reporters at Delhi airport.
He was speaking after four central ministers, including Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal, rushed to the airport to hold talks with the yoga guru.
Ramdev said the first round of talks with the government was 'positive', adding that more rounds will take place.
'The talks will continue and the first round of talks has been positive and we have agreed on some issues. But till the time there is complete agreement on all issues, this satyagraha will continue,' he said.
Ramdev said that the movement was not to 'bully anybody'. 'But, our issues are in public and national interest and our fight is not against any person or party. Our motive is not to criticise anyone'.
He said their 'battle was to change the system (which is) 64 years old'. 'It is very tough but we will do it because the brave efforts of crores of people are supporting this movement,' said Ramdev.
The yoga guru said that the main issue was black money, followed by corruption. Apart from a strong and competent Lokpal, we have also talked about a public service delivery guarantee act which should apply to all services provided by the central and state governments, he said.
He urged the government to declare black money stashed abroad as 'national asset'. 'There should be a fast track court in every state and verdicts should be delivered within a year and there should be a clause of providing death penalty to the guilty,' suggested Ramdev.
The yoga guru added that the government should inspect the record of visits made by Indian nationals to tax havens abroad. 'I have proposed that the list of people who have travelled to tax haven countries in the last 20 years should be investigated physically,' said Ramdev.
'The immigration department can be asked to provide lists of people travelling to the tax haven countries in the last 20 years,' said Ramdev.
He said that while names of Indians travelling to these countries for genuine reasons could be removed from the list, politicians, bureaucrats and certain businessmen who have been going to these countries should be investigated.
Earlier, Sibal said Ramdev raised 'very important' issues during the talks.
'We (UPA ministers) met Baba Ramdev just after 1 p.m... the conversation was carried on for almost two and a half hours. During the conversation, Swami Ramdevji raised a broad range of very important and significant national issues,' Sibal said.
'We listened to him. We also prima facie responded to him and we will meet each other and have another dialogue in the next couple of days,' he said.
'I am sure that as we are a responsive government, we will take (up) all those issues which were raised and this is all I have to say as of now,' Sibal added.

5 lies that women tell their girlfriends

It has been revealed that women, who usually share everything under the sun with one another, tell five lies to their girlfriends when they do not want to reveal something very personal.
According to Madame Noire, a lifestyle publication, women especially lie when they want to keep things private.
1. How long they really made their new man wait. As they do not want their girlfriends to know about the actual date, they just say somewhere from 3 to 6 months.
Hot reads on Lifestyle:
2. How much they earn, and most lie so that the question of borrowing money won't be a factor, while others just refuse to answer.
3. When a haircut has gone bad. Women would tell their girlfriends that it does not look so bad just to spare them from feeling worse.
4. When the issue of what the man has bought arises. Women cover up whatever cheap gifts a man has bought them by naming a few gifts they wished he had bought.
5. About their ex not being in their lives anymore. Women do so because they have discussed all the negative aspects of their ex with their girlfriends.
When they start backing their ex they keep it away from their friends, as it is difficult to go back on all the negative things they have said about him to their girlfriends.
So instead, they deny any communication, at least to see if he's going to be in their lives for a while. (ANI)

Sukanya Roy wins 84th Scripps National Spelling Bee

How Do You Spell ‘cymotrichous’? No matter how you spell it, the word provides yet another feather in the cap of Indian-Americans at the Scripps National Spelling Bee contest, as Sukanya Roy became the fourth consecutive Indian-American, and the ninth Indian American to win the title in the last 12 years.

Sukanya Roy, an eighth-grader at Abington Heights Middle School, won the 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night, correctly spelling 'periscii' and 'cymotrichous' to win the title. She will will take home more than $40,000 in cash and prizes.

The ultimate test for school kids, the Scripps National Spelling Bee has been wrung into an inspiring novel, a documentary, a feature film and a Broadway musical. So what makes Indians click at contests like the Spelling Bee? Is it their penchant for the language, their ability to study by rote, or is it their desire to stand out in the crowd of immigrants that have made the US their home?

Here are a few Indian-Americans who won the Scripps National Spelling Bee contest:

Anamika Veeramani in 2010: The 14-year-old from North Royalton, Ohio, successfully spelled the words ‘Juvia’ and ‘Stromuhr’ to become the Bee’s 83rd champion. Repeating the community’s feat of 2005, when Anurag Kashyap, Aliya Deri, Samir Patel and Rajiv Tarigopula won the top four positions.

Kavya Shivshankar in 2009: Kavya Shivshankar of Olethe, Kansas, spelt the word ‘Laodicean’ to claim the title in 2009. Kavya who finished fourth in 2008, cracked words like ‘Escritoire’, ‘Hydrargyrum’, ‘Blancmange’, ‘Baignoire’, ‘Ecossaise’, ‘Diacoele’, ‘Bouquiniste’, ‘Isagoge’, and ‘Phoresy’ to win the coveted title.

Sameer Mishra in 2008: After watching his sister’s unsuccessful attempt to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee, Sameer Mishra set himself on a mission to win the Scripps. And he did it in style when he aced the word ‘Guerdon’ to win the 81st National Spelling Bee contest. Sameer became the first speller to win the title after misspelling his onstage word in the preliminary round.

Anurag Kashyap in 2005: Correctly spelling the word ‘Appoggiatura’, Anurag Kashyap clinched the 2005 edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Anurag whizzed through relatively common words such as ‘Prosciutto’, an Italian dry-cured ham, and difficult ones such as ‘Sphygmomanometer’, an instrument for measuring blood pressure.

Sai R. Gunturi in 2003: Sai R. Gunturi, a 13-year-old from Dallas, Texas, won the 76th Annual Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee with the word ‘Pococurante’. He survived 15 rounds to emerge as the 2003 national champion. Among the words Sai spelt correctly en route to the title were ‘Marmoraceous’, ‘Mistassini’, ‘Solfeggio’, ‘Voussoir’, ‘Halogeton’, ‘Dipnoous’, ‘Peirastic’, and ‘Rhathymia’.

Pratyush Buddiga in 2002: Pratyush Buddiga won the 75th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee when he correctly spelt the word ‘Prospicience’ in the 11th round.

George Abraham Thampy in 2000: Nicknamed ‘Georgie’, George Abraham Thampy of St Louis, Missouri, spelt the word ‘Demarche’ to win the 73rd edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee contest. Thampy also competed in the National Geographic Bee in 2000, taking second place in that competition one week before he won the National Spelling Bee.

Nupur Lala in 1999: She spelt the word ‘Logorrhea’ to be crowned the champion of the 72nd Scripps National Spelling Bee. She edged out David Lewandowski who missed out on the word ‘Opsimath’. She was also a part of the 2002 documentary ‘Spellbound’, that followed eight competitors in the 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Documentary Feature.

Rageshree Ramachandran  in 1988: Rageshree Ramachandran won the Bee when she was in the eighth grade – her winning word was ‘Elegiacal’. At age 15, she won a $10,000 Westinghouse Science Talent Search scholarship and always lists her championship on her resumes and applications.

Balu Natarajan in 1985: In 1985, Balu Natarajan beat out his competitors by spelling ‘Milieu’ to become an overnight sensation for the Indian-American community. Now a doctor of sports medicine, Balu Natarajan was quoted as saying, “Indian record on spelling bees gives the community quite a bit of confidence that we can do well here, much like other ethnicities pursuing the American dream.”

Just like big names from the film industry and celebrities from other walks of life, Indians who have won the Scripps National Spelling Bee contest have given the Indian community a reason to believe that they too can achieve a lot in a country that they migrated to and dream to live the great American life.
