Narayana Murthy wants woman leader on Infy board

NR Narayana Murthy, set to retire as chairman of the company he co-founded three decades ago, has one unfinished task -- to bring a woman leader back on the Infosys board.

It's a challenge that not just he and the IT services sector are grappling with; most of India Inc is dealing with the same issue, what with one recent study indicating that just 48 women account for 1,112 directorships on the companies that make up the BSE 100.

Murthy is doing his bit to make that statistic look better. Over the past one year, even as he prepares to retire from Infosys, Murthy and the company's Nominations Committee Chairman Jeffrey Sean Lehman have been evaluating several women candidates for a position on the board of India's second-largest software exporter.

According to at least three people familiar with the proposals being deliberated by the Infosys board, the company is in dialogue with a woman director on the board of Unilever.

'Murthy has served on the boards of Unilever and HSBC outside India. He's currently looking at bringing a woman leader from Unilever, whom he already knows,' said a person familiar with the proposal. He requested anonymity and declined to share the name of this woman leader.

HSBC and Unilever are among two global boards Murthy has served on, and both have enough woman leaders to choose from.
